Five famous guitars played at Woodstock 1969. Considered the most important rock concert ever held, The Woodstock Music & Art Fair took place over four days in August 1969, helping to launch the careers of several outstanding musicians and demonstrated the counter culture and hippie culture of the 1960’s. Reputed to be the only Irish musician to have played at The Woodstock Festival in 1969, Henry McCullough used this 1968 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop while playing lead guitar with Joe Cocker and the Grease Band. Alvin Lee’s Big Red, a 1959 Gibson ES-335, was his main instrument throughout his career although he wasn’t happy with the stock sound and had added a single coil Stratocaster pickup to the middle position before Ten Years After tore up the stage at Woodstock. This 1968 Olympic White Fender Stratocaster became famous when Jimi Hendrix used it to produce one of his longest and most famous sets including a solo performance of The Star-Spangled Banner played as part of a medley lasting over half an hour. Scheduled to play on the Saturday, The Who eventually got to the stage around 5am on Sunday when Pete Townshend performed Tommy on his ’67 Cherry Red Gibson SG Special. Paul Kantner played his distinctive Rickenbacker 360/12 MG when Jefferson Airplane finally took the stage around 8am on the Sunday, playing the ‘morning maniac music’ slot.
